Best Car Seat Deals for Amazon’s 2015 Black Friday Sales

As the temperatures drop across the country and we get closer to Thanksgiving and Black Friday, I always like to remind parents of safe Thanksgiving holiday driving tips, and point them toward the best deals for car seats and other safety gear.

It’s tempting to just pick up a cheap seat, especially if money is tight, and it’s certainly true that even a basic seat is better than no seat at all. However, you’ll give your kids the best protection if you take the time to put them into quality car seats, and not just the ones that you find on sale.

Fortunately, since I run a car seat and car safety blog, I never get tired of talking about the safest seats on the market, as well as the ones that are the best deals for the money at a range of price points. Here are some of the convertible seats, combination seats, infant seats, and booster seats I recommend most frequently when working with parents interested in safe child restraints for their children. My thoughts on each seat are included, as well as links to full reviews and Amazon pages. Good luck shopping and I wish you the safest of travels and family times as we approach the end of the year.

Have fun shopping and remember to rear-face until 4 if possible, forward-face until 8 if possible, and booster until your child passes the 5 step test. It takes a bit of work to do so, but the rewards in keeping your kids safer for longer are worth it.

The 4 Best Convertible Seats that Rear-Face to 50 pounds

   pacifica

The Clek Fllo – Review Here, Buy Here.
The Diono Rainier – Review Here, Buy Here.
The Clek Foonf – Review Here, Buy Here.
The Diono Pacifica – Review Here, Buy Here.

These are the four best car seats available today in the United States when it comes to extended rear-facing. Any of these seats will allow you to rear-face just about any child from birth until age 5, and any of these seats will also allow you to forward your face afterward for some amount of time.

The Dionos are the best value for the money if you’re looking to maximize the time you spend between buying car seats, as both offer longer forward-facing usable times than the Clek seats, and also include booster modes, even though those modes aren’t going to be useful for some kids. The advantage of the Clek seats is that they’re as narrow as convertible car seats get, which means it’s possible to fit them 3 across in just about any vehicle.

My favorite seat of the four is the Fllo, followed by the Rainier, but you can’t go wrong with any of them. No seats on the market will allow you to rear-face longer than these 4, and since rear-facing is the safest position we can place our children in whenever traveling with them in a vehicle, this is where you want to be if you can afford it in terms of child safety.

Remember to pick up the infant insert as well if you’re buying one of the Cleks and want to use them from the day you leave the hospital, otherwise you’ll need to wait until your child has head control and can sit up independently. Similarly, if you’re buying one of the Dionos, make sure to pick up an angle adjuster so you’ll have a reasonable amount of room when driving or sitting as a passenger in the front row of your vehicle.

The Britax Marathon ClickTight – Review Here, Buy Here.
The Chicco NextFit – Review Here, Buy Here.

The 40 pound convertible seat market is packed, but these seats stand out time and time again. They all have astronomically high seat backs, which means that your children are all but guaranteed to reach the 40 pound weight limit before they need to be forward-faced. Of the seats, the Advocate offers the best side impact protection, while I think the Boulevard or NextFit are the best value.

Top 3 Convertible Seats on a Budget (i.e., under $200)

 contender - 1

The Graco Head Wise 65 – Review Here, Buy Here.
The Graco Size4Me 65 – Review Here, Buy Here.
The Graco
Contender – Review Here, Buy Here.

When it comes to absolute value for rear-facing, you can’t get any better than the Graco clones, including the Head Wise 65, the Size4Me 65, and the Contender. In fact, these are my three favorite convertibles, bar none, under $200. I have all three seats installed in family vehicles right now, and between the three, the main differences are that the Head Wise 65 has more side impact protection and head support, while the Size4Me feels a bit bony in comparison due to the thinner fabrics used. The Contender only comes with one set of LATCH anchors and takes up a bit more space when rear-facing. As a result, I’d choose the Head Wise or Size4Me over the Contender if you can afford it. All three seats are great, however, and come with exactly the same height and weight limits. The Head Wise 70 used to have a 70-lb forward-facing weight limit, but this was reduced recently due to updated governmental regulations.

The UPPAbaby MESA – Review Here, Buy Here.
The Peg Perego Primo Viaggio 4-35 – Review Here, Buy Here.
The Cybex Aton 2 – Review Here, Buy Here.

When it comes to infant seats, I’m looking for ease of installation and ease of use, and these three seats are the best in the market when it comes to both of those factors, as well as when it comes to stroller compatibility in the case of the UPPAbaby MESA. Of the three seats, my favorite is the MESA, but all three are solid choices and are among the best in the market in rear-facing weight limits for infant seats.

The 2 Best Infant Seats on a Budget (i.e., under $200)

 clickconnect40-1

The Chicco KeyFit 30 – Review Here, Buy Here.
The Graco Snugride Click Connect 40 Review Here, Buy Here.

If you’re interested in infant seats below $200, Chicco and Graco are doing excellent jobs with the KeyFit 30 and the Click Connect 40. The KeyFit 30 is very user friendly and compatible with a range of strollers, including the Bravo, while the Click Connect 40 will allow many children to rear-face well past 1 without needing to switch seats due to its additional height.

Personally, I’m a fan of just starting out with a great convertible so you don’t have to switch later on in order to keep rear-facing, so if I had $200 and a baby on the way, I’d go with either the Head Size 70, Size4Me, or Contender and skip the infant seat stage. However, if that’s not an option or if you need to be able to transport your infant in and out of a vehicle without waking him or her, then these are two great infant seats that won’t break the bank.

The 2 Best Combination / Booster Seats that Forward-Face to 90 pounds and Booster to 120 pounds

The Britax Frontier G1.1 – Review Here, Buy Here.
The Britax Pinnacle G1.1 – Review Here, Buy Here.

The Frontier and the Pinnacle are combination seats, which means they can both be used as forward-facing harnessed seats and as booster seats. Often seats that do one thing well do something else poorly. However, in this case, you’re looking at the two best forward-facing seats and the two best booster seats available in the United States as of this writing. I think that’s pretty cool.

There isn’t another car seat that does either of these jobs (forward-facing or boostering) better than these two seats. I love the Frontier and Pinnacle because if you buy either, it’s pretty much guaranteed to last your child until s/he no longer needs a car seat any more (i.e., when s/he can pass the 5-step test). That’s pretty awesome in my books.

The Clek Oobr – Review Here, Buy Here.
The Maxi-Cosi RodiFix – Review Here, Buy Here.
The Kiddy Cruiserfix Pro – Review Here, Buy Here.

Although the Frontier and Pinnacle are my favorite boosters, if you’re not able to pick either of them up or are on a shorter budget, then your best best will involve the Oobr, RodiFix, and CruisterFix pro. Of these, the Oobr is my favorite; it has a long history of quality and is a solid choice for belt positioning and keeping kids safe until they’re old enough to use the adult seat belt.

Best Car Seat Deals for Amazon’s 2015 Prime Day Sales

Amazon’s turning 20, which means they’re having a super-sale day named Prime Day on 7/15. Personally, I tend to buy the car seats I review from Amazon to take advantage of their prices, free shipping, and free returns, so I tend to recommend them to readers looking for the best place to buy particular seats. Amazon claims that they’re going to have better prices and deals for everything on their site than they did on both Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and I look forward to seeing if this is true.

Something neat about Prime Day is that if you’re a Prime Member, you get to take advantage of various deals on the site and get free 2-day shipping for a year. If you’d like to sign up for a 30-day free Prime trial, you can do so here. Similarly, if you’d like to gift someone Prime membership, you can do so here. We’re Prime members for the free shipping, and it’s come in handy with a variety of things we’ve bought lately. We’ve been gardening and experimenting with homesteading while trying to stay ecologically conscious (hence the electric mower, trimmer, and tiller we’ve bought in the last few weeks).

At any rate, here are the best deals I’ve been able to find in car seats throughout Amazon this Prime Day; I’ll update the list with prices as I find more throughout the day. My goal was to find the best values for infant seats, convertible seats, combination seats, and booster seats, and I included my personal thoughts on which of the seats are must-haves if you’re in the market for a new particular kind of seat. I didn’t try to find every seat on the market; there are plenty of good ones. These are just my favorites in particular categories.

Have fun shopping and remember to rear-face until 4 if possible, forward-face until 8 if possible, and booster until your child passes the 5 step test. It takes a bit of work to do so, but the rewards in keeping your kids safer for longer are worth it.

The Graco Snugride Click Connect 40 Review Here, Buy Here.

If you’re on a $200 budget, these are my favorite convertible and infant seats currently on the market. The Size4Me 65 and its clones have long been my favorite overall car seat recommendations, simply because they’re designed to enable just about any child to rear-face from birth until 4, due to the 40 pound weight limit and extraordinary height limit. The Contender is a cheaper version of the Size4Me that skips out on some padding and a few creature comforts (e.g., additional LATCH straps) but offers the same rear-facing potential at a slightly lower price.

If you’re interested in infant seats, below $200, Chicco and Graco are doing excellent jobs with the KeyFit 30 and the Click Connect 40. The KeyFit 30 is very user friendly and compatible with a range of strollers, including the Bravo, while the Click Connect 40 will allow many children to rear-face well past 1 without needing to switch seats due to its additional height.

Gift Guide: Top 4 Car Seats to Give as Safe Christmas Gifts

santa_claus_and_christmas_tree‘Tis the season for family get-togethers, Christmas trees, stocking stuffers, and…car seats?

If you’re thinking of ideas for holiday and Christmas gift-giving, you might want to consider a car seat. Car safety isn’t likely to be on many people’s minds as the holidays approach, but considering that car accidents are the number one killers of children between 1 and 13, it’s worth doing everything we can to keep not only our children, but the children of our dear friends and extended family members safe. That means being open to buying new car seats, and it means being aware of the mistakes we make too often with our car seat installations, especially with the miles so many families will put on their vehicles in the next few weeks.

The holidays should be a time of joy and celebration, and not loss, but dozens of families around the country will sadly lose children in the coming weeks due to preventable and tragic car accidents, such as this accident that took the life of an infant while her family drove home from a Christmas party on Christmas day.  Her father reportedly fell asleep at the wheel and crossed the center line. However, every occupant in both vehicles survived, except for the 13-month old baby. If there’s anything we can do to reduce the likelihood of our children being injured or worse this Christmas, we should do it, and do it gladly.

Here is a list of my 4 favorite car seats right now, carefully handpicked by my assessment of the degree to which they’re likely to be installed correctly, fit a range of children well, and enable rear-facing, forward-facing, or boostering, depending on the design of the seat. Each car seat makes an excellent holiday gift that will keep on giving the gift of safety in cars for years to come. I selected my favorite convertible, infant seat, combination seat, and booster. In order to learn why these kinds of seats are important, be sure to read my guides to extended rear-facing, extended harnessing, and boostering.

Ho ho ho! Let’s see what Santa suggests stocking under the tree this Christmas…

Best Convertible Seat: Clek Fllo – Review Here, Buy Here.

The Clek Fllo is simply the best car seat money can buy right now, even though it’s not nearly the most expensive. What makes it the best? It’s one of only four seats that allows you to rear-face your child until 50 pounds, and you can’t get any better than that today in the United States. It’s been extensively tested for side-impact protection by Clek, and it’s the car seat I turn to on a daily basis to keep my kids safe.

Why else is the Fllo the most awesome convertible car seat? It also comes with a variety of additional safety features designed by Clek to limit rotational forces in the event of a collision, and has the distinction of being the narrowest convertible on the market that allows for extended rear-facing (along with its older sibling the Foonf, of course). At 17 inches in width, you can install it 3 across in virtually every car sold in the United States. If it’s out of budget, look to the Head Wise 70, which is by far the best value car seat for rear-facing on the market today, as well as another seat I have installed in family vehicles.

Best Infant Seat: Chicco KeyFit 30 – Review Here, Buy Here.

There’s a reason why the Chicco KeyFit 30 is the single best-selling infant car seat today in the United States: it keeps kids safe and it does so on a small budget. It’s also about the easiest to install infant car seat on the planet, and considering how often parents incorrectly install infant seats, anything that makes it easier to do so correctly should be considered.

Are there infant seats that give you higher weight limits, potentially allowing you to rear-face longer than you would with the KeyFit 30? Sure – for example, there’s the UPPAbaby MESA and Peg Perego Primo Viaggio 4-35. However, if you’re looking for a quick and easily-installable infant car seat on a budget, it’s hard to do better than the KeyFit 30. If you do have more cash to spend, definitely look into the MESA and Primo Viaggio 4-35. And remember that whichever infant seat you choose, you’ll still want to choose a convertible seat as your next seat, since seats like the Fllo, Foonf, Rainier, or Pacifica will give you much more rear-facing time than you’ll get from any infant seat.

Best Combination Seat: Britax Frontier 90 – Review Here, Buy Here.

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of the Britax combination twins, the Frontier 90 and Pinnacle 90. I consider the Frontier 90 to be the best combination, or front-facing harnessed and booster seat, on the market today in the United States. It allows you to harness until 90 pounds, which no other combination seat does besides the  Pinnacle 90, and it also has the highest top harness slot on the market, along with the Pinnacle 90.

What does this mean? It means your children are actually likely to make it to the 90 pound weight limit. And then from there you remove the harness and start boostering, because it’s also an awesome booster seat. If you’ve got a slightly larger budget, you’ll want to look into the Pinnacle 90, which offers the same height and weight limits but adds valuable side impact protection. Either way, you can’t lose; these are the two best harnessed seats on the market, bar none.

Best Booster Seat: Britax Pinnacle 90 – Review Here, Buy Here.

Last, but not least, if you’re looking for a good booster seat, you can’t do any better than the Pinnacle 90. It offers the same top seat belt shoulder height limit as that of the Frontier 90, which at 23″ is the tallest seated shoulder height available on the market. Combined with the 120 pound weight limit, this means that children will actually be able to use the Pinnacle 90 (or Frontier 90) until they pass the 5-step test between ages 10-12 and are ready for the adult seat belt.

This can literally be the last car seat your child ever needs, which I love. The advantages of the Pinnacle 90 over the Frontier 90 are that it comes with additional side impact protection that simply isn’t present in the Frontier 90. If you’re on a smaller budget, however, the Frontier 90 will allow you to booster to exactly the same weight and height limits, so you can’t lose either way.

Concluding Santa Thoughts

This year, Santa will undoubtedly bring lots of flashy gadgets to children all over the United States, including a lot of electronic gizmos like the Xbox One, Nintendo Wii, Sony Playstation 4, Kindle Fire, and so on. Are they neat? Oh yeah! However, none of these devices will do more for your kids’ development than a car seat that keeps them safe enough to have the rest of these experiences. This holiday season, make a long-lasting investment in your children and the children of your friends and extended family. A good car seat can make all the difference in the world.

These are the best convertible car seats available in the United States right now when it comes to extended rear-facing. They allow you to rear-face until 50 pounds, which is as good as it gets today in the US. Of the three seats, the Rainier is the best deal, but the Fllo is my personal favorite. You can’t lose with any of these seats, however, so rest assured that your child will be well protected regardless of which you choose.

The Chicco KeyFit 30 – Review Here, Buy Here.

The KeyFit 30 is the number one selling infant seat in the United States for a reason: it’s an excellent value and makes the achievement of a safe installation a snap. I also love the fact that it has a great amount of compatibility with a range of Chicco strollers, including with the Bravo stroller.

The Britax Pinnacle 90 – Review Here, Buy Here.

The Britax combination seats are not only the best combination seats on the market, they’re also among the best booster seats you can buy at any price, especially in the case of the Pinnacle and Frontier 90. For me, the Frontier 90 is the best deal, as it offers the high seat height and weight limits of the Pinnacle without the additional price.

Although the Frontier 90 and Pinnacle 90 are my favorite boosters, if you’re not able to pick either of them up or are on a shorter budget, then your best best will involve the Oobr, RodiFix, and CruisterFix pro. Of these, the Oobr is my favorite; it has a long history of quality and is a solid choice for belt positioning and keeping kids safe until they’re old enough to use the adult seat belt.

Best Car Seats to Buy on Amazon’s Black Friday Sales

Something neat about this part of the year is that Amazon likes to discount car seats as we get closer to the Thanksgiving holiday and Black Friday. This is a good time to pick up a car seat or two that you might have been considering, especially if you know you’ll need one in the next several months or would like to gift one (or several) to family members.

That said, if you’re interested in buying a car seat this holiday season, you’ll want to make sure you’re getting a quality seat, and not just any you find on sale. Fortunately, running a car seat blog means I’m always up for talking about my most recommended car seats. Here are some of my favorite convertibles, infant, and booster seats of the moment, along with my reviews and personal thoughts on the merit of each seat. Good luck shopping and safe travels as we approach the winter months.

The Graco Head Wise 70 – Review Here, Buy Here.
The Maxi-Cosi Pria 85 – Review Here, Buy Here.

Graco has been making quality convertible seats for years, but they really struck gold with their Size4Me 65 clones. I’ve already described the Size4Me family as my favorite convertible car seat under $200, and that’s absolutely still the case. The Head Wise 70 is worth the price difference, especially when it’s so small during Black Friday time, as it adds a good amount of side impact protection that also has the benefit of making the seat more comfortable. I’m also a fan of the Pria 85, although it’s not as good of a deal as the Gracos, which are phenomenally priced right now. If you buy nothing else today, buy those. You’ll thank me later when the prices shoot up again.

The Britax Marathon ClickTight – Review Here, Buy Here.
The Britax Boulevard ClickTight – Review Here, Buy Here.

I’ve got to admit it. I’m a fan of the new Britax ClickTight line. They make it easy to get safe and secure seat belt installations and come with some of the best levels of side impact protection currently available. They all rear-face until 40 pounds and are three of the best seats on the market right now when it comes to ease of installation and usability. Personally, I find the Boulevard to be the sweet spot in value of the three, but you really can’t go wrong with any of them.

When it comes to infant seats, I’m pretty picky, but Chicco, UPPAbaby, and Peg Perego have earned my trust by putting out consistently good infant seats for years on end, and the KeyFit 30, MESA, and 4-35 are no exception. When you buy an infant seat, you’re looking for one that’s easy to install and easy to remove, as the number one goal when living with a young infant is to keep him or her sleeping as long as possible. I’ve lived through it, and a good infant seat makes those first few sleepless months just a little bit easier to get through.

Booster / Combination Seats

The Britax Pinnacle 90 – Review Here, Buy Here.
Britax is running on all cylinders when it comes to their combination seats, which actually do a better job of fitting children throughout the booster years than any other booster seats on the market right now. If you’re in the market for either a combination (front-facing harnessed) seat or a booster seat right now, these are the two best choices. Remember, of course, that children actually need to be boostered until they’re close to 12, even if you see lots of children much younger in seat belts. When you know better, you do better.
