3 Across Installations: Which Car Seats Fit In a Kia Sedona?

The Kia Sedona is one of the most popular non-Japanese minivans available in the United States, competing with the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna, as well as with US offerings like the Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler Town & Country, and Chrysler Pacifica. The Sedona has developed a reputation as an affordable alternative to the Sienna and Odyssey, and fills a niche for families interested in safety and reliability without the top sticker prices of the more famous minivans on the market. I borrowed a new and old Sedona this weekend in order to see how well they worked when it came to 3 across installations in a Kia Sedona.

It’s a good idea to review best practice principles when it comes to car seat safety, and that means rear-facing children as long as possible (ideally until 4!), and then forward-facing our kiddos as long as feasible (ideally until 6!), and then placing them in booster seats until they’re capable of using a regular seat belt (which typically happens between 10 and 12). These guidelines are meant to keep our little ones as safe as possible by restraining them appropriately as long as feasible.

However, to apply best practices, we need to know which car seats we’re going to be able to use in the Kia Sedona, which is why I wrote this guide. I had a small army of car seats available in my garage and got to work. Several hours later, I came up with what I believe to be the most detailed list of 3 across combinations possible in the Kia Sedona. It’s not a complete list, but it’s off to a very strong start. If you find the list helpful when shopping for car seats for your Sedona, you can show your support by shopping through my Amazon link below. I’ll add more seats as I test them over time.

You can access the complete 3 across guide for every vehicle here and the complete list of recommended seats here. The Canadian car seat guide is here. 3 across car seat images are courtesy of Wikipedia.

Tips and Tricks:

This generation of the Kia Sedona is 201 inches long and 78 inches wide, or 1 inch shorter than the previous generation. This means that in general, any car seat configurations you can install in the previous generation will work well in this generation. It’s important to note that the 3rd row is much narrower than the 2nd row, and you’re only going to be able to fit the narrowest of seats (17″ or narrower) in 3 across configurations there. The 2nd row is much more amenable, although you’ll need an 8-passenger Sedona to get any 3 across configurations to work, of course.

Tips and Tricks:

This generation of the Kia Sedona is 202 inches long and 78 inches wide, which means 3 across installations are going to be rather easy to accomplish, both in terms of width and in terms of front-to-back length. However, it’s important to note that you can’t achieve a 3 across installation in the 3rd row with the Diono Radian / RXT in the center seat of the 3rd row; it needs to be in an outboard position.

3 Across Installations: Which Car Seats Will Fit In a Volvo XC90?

The Volvo XC90 is a rather unique  luxury Swedish mid-sized SUV that’s been available in the United States for more than a decade, competing with foreign and domestic 3-row luxury offerings like the Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GL-ClassBuick Enclave, Infiniti Q60, and Lexus GX, as well as with its smaller company sibling, the Volvo XC60. The XC90 has a reputation as a safe, if somewhat temperamental SUV, and is often chosen by parents interested in safe transportation for their families with a bit of luxury along the way. I borrowed both generations of the XC90 this past weekend in order to take a look at its utility from a 3 across car seat perspective.

I always advocate starting with the basics when it comes to car seat safety, and that means rear-facing children as long as possible (ideally until 4!), and then forward-facing our kiddos as long as feasible (ideally until 8!), and then placing them in booster seats until they’re capable of using a regular seat belt (which typically happens between 10 and 12). These guidelines are meant to keep our little ones as safe as possible by restraining them appropriately as long as feasible.

However, if you’re going to make sense of best practices, you need to have an idea of which car seats are and aren’t going to fit well in your Volvo XC90, which is why I put this guide together. I got out all of my easily-accessible car seats, set up shop in my garage, and several bruised knuckles later, came up with a rather detailed list of which car seats will fit 3 across in an XC90. The list isn’t complete, but it’s off to a great start. If you find it useful, you can show your support by shopping through my Amazon link below. I’ll add more seats as I test them over time.

Tips and Tricks:

The current generation of the XC90 is 195 inches long and 78 inches wide, which means the world is practically your oyster when it comes to 3 across installations across the 2nd row. That said, using seat belts will help you maximize the ample space you have in that row; save LATCH for when you only need to install one or two seats.

You can also install up to 2 seats in the 3rd row, although you don’t have nearly as much room to play with there as you do in the 2nd row. You’re also going to be somewhat limited in front-to-back space in both the 2nd and 3rd row, so you’ll want to consult my list of space-saving convertibles if you’ve got taller passengers or drivers to accommodate.

Something to keep in mind is that, while there are 3 top tether anchors available in the 2nd row, there aren’t any in the 3rd row, which makes the 3rd row unsuitable for installing forward-facing car seats. You’ll also struggle to install infant seats there (due to front-to-back space), so the 3rd row will be best suited for booster seats and small adults. Remember not to skimp on top tethers while forward-facing; they’re very important.

Tips and Tricks:

This generation of the Volvo XC90 is 189 inches long and 75 inches wide, which means that it’s about as likely to fit most car seats as any other mid-sized SUV on the market.

One of the unique things about the XC90 is that many models come equipped with a 2nd row center slide out booster seat. It’s a nice feature, but being a backless booster, it’s not one I’d recommend unless you didn’t have a high back booster available.   That said, hopefully more vehicles start including built in seats over time.

Unlike many mid-sized SUVs, it has an optional 3rd row, but the 3rd row only accommodates 2 seats, which means you don’t have any additional flexibility when it comes to 3 across installations. As usual, look to seat belt installations to garner additional space when attempting installations. Additionally, if you’re planning on using Radians in the 2nd or 3rd rows, you’ll definitely want to pick up an angle adjuster so you can rear-face them without bumping into the seats in front of the car seat.

3 Across Installations: Which Car Seats Will Fit In a Ford Edge?

The Ford Edge is one of the most popular American-made mid-sized SUVs on the market right now, competing with foreign and domestic offerings like the Dodge Journey, Honda Pilot, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Mercedes M-Class, as well as with its structural twin, the Lincoln MKX. The Edge is frequently chosen by families interested in a comfortable and stylish SUV with a good amount of trunk space. I borrowed one this weekend in order to see which car seats fit best in a Ford Edge, and to test the limits of the SUV in terms of 3 across installations.

However, to put this information to use, you’ve got to apply it to the car seats that will and won’t fit your Ford Edge, which is where this guide comes in. I’ve reviewed a lot of car seats over the years, and I took out a lot of them to see which ones would and wouldn’t work in the Edge. It took a lot of scraped knuckles and clanking about in my garage, but I’ve finally got a list put together. If you find it useful, you can show your support by shopping through my Amazon link below. I’ll add more seats as I test them over time.

Tips and Tricks:

The current generation of the Ford Edge is 188 inches long and 76 inches wide, which means that any car seats that fit in the previous generation for 3 across setups are basically guaranteed to fit into the current generation. Using your seat belts instead of LATCH will increase your odds of getting good fits even further. Remember that seat belts are as safe as LATCH, but allow you to install seats in more outboard positions, allowing you to fit wider seats in the same amount of back row space.

Tips and Tricks:

The initial generation of the Ford Edge is 186 inches long and 76 inches wide, which means you’re going to be able to fit the majority of car seats out there in it in 3 across configurations. In fact, the ease of 3 across installations in the Edge should be comparable to that of just about any other mid-sized SUV currently available.

3 Across Installations: Which Car Seats Fit a Volkswagen Passat?

The Volkswagen Passat is a popular luxury European mid-sized car that competes with the cheaper Jetta as well as with Japanese offerings like the Honda Accord, Subaru Outback, Toyota Camry, and Toyota Prius V. Available in both sedan and station wagon versions, the Passat is a popular choice among parents who want safety, luxury, and versatility when transporting their children. I borrowed a few sedans and wagons this weekend in effort to see which car seats could fit 3 across in a Passat without too much trouble.

In my experience, the best protected children in vehicles are the ones who rear-face as long as they can (ideally until 4!), and then forward-face as long as feasible (ideally until 8!), and then booster until they can use a regular seat belt (which typically happens between 10 and 12). These guidelines keep your children as safe as possible by keeping them in the right orientations as long as possible.

However, to make the best use of this information, you need to know which car seats will fit well and which will give you trouble when you try to fit them into your Passat. I put all of my car seats together and spent time installing and uninstalling them in my garage this weekend in a variety of Passats in order to make this 3 across guide. If you find it useful, you can show your support by shopping through my Amazon link below. I’ll add more seats as I test them over time.

These installations apply equally to the sedan and SportWagen (hatchback station wagon) version of the Passat.

3 Across Installations: Which Car Seats Fit a Chevrolet Silverado / GMC Sierra?

The “Chevy” Chevrolet Silverado (and its badge clone, the GMC Sierra), is one of the most popular pickup trucks available today in the United States, competing with full-sized pickups like the Ford F-150, Honda Ridgeline, Toyota Tundra and Dodge Ram. Available in single, double, and crew cab versions, the Silverado is popular among construction, plumbing, electrical, and other physical occupations. However, it’s also used by a number of families who need ways of transporting their children when more traditional vehicles like cars and minivans aren’t available. I spent the past weekend with a few new and old Silverados trying all of my available car seats out to see what would fit in terms of 3 across car seat installations.

If you want to keep your children as safe as possible, regardless of your vehicle, you’ll want to follow best practices. I typically suggest keeping children rear-facing as long as possible (until 4 or 5 like the Swedes), followed by harnessing until they can safely use booster seats (until at least 5, like the Swedes), and then boostering until the 5 step test is passed (typically between 10, 11, and 12). Beyond that, I suggest keeping kids in the back seat until at least 13, and delaying teen solo driving until 18 if possible. The goal isn’t to move through seats as quickly as possible; it’s to keep kids as safe as possible whenever they’re in motor vehicles. These guidelines keep your children as safe as possible by keeping them in the right orientations as long as possible.

However, if you’re going to do a good job following these guidelines, you need to know which car seats will and won’t work in your Chevy Silverado, which is why I put this guide together. Here’s what I found about which car seats will fit best in a Silverado. I’ll continue to add more car seats as I find them and have more Silverados at my disposal.

This generation of the Chevy Silverado is at least 220 inches long and 78 inches wide, which means you’re not going to have any trouble when it comes to 3 across installations in terms of width, regardless of which seats you choose, due to the width. For example, I was able to achieve the Graco-Graco-Recaro installations with at least 3 inches to spare in terms of width.

The challenge, if you have any, will come with front-to-back space when using certain seats or if you have passengers and drivers who need more leg room. This won’t be an issue when it comes to the extended cab, but you naturally won’t have as much room in the double cab, and of course, it won’t be relevant in the single cab.
